A couple questions about racing

I think that I’m going to try racing this year, I have no idea what I’m doing but figure now is as good a time as ever. What kind of trails are the valley short track races on? rocky and rooty or fast and flowy? Assuming the gorge? Also, what exactly does “short track” mean?

Short Track or “XCC” by the UCI codes does typically run on mostly smooth, wide trails often double track but can feature short sections of singletrack. Loops are normally 1-2km.

Mass start races, expect to be on the bike for between 15-30 minutes depending on category. Pound out as many laps as you can.

At the Canadian Championships and past Kentville Canada Cup races we run our XCC at Memorial Park using a portions of the Bottle Rocket trails plus the gravel running track, grass hill sides and surrounding area.

Check out the Cyclesmith short track series at Africville lookout park starting in May too. Haven’t participated in years myself, but it was always a fun time when I did.
