Flat pedal recommendations

Looking to get some decent flat pedals. Been riding on cheap $15 composite pedals for a few years, so anything is likely better than I’m used to. What are you guys riding? Somewhere around the $100 price point

I’m currently on DMR Vault’s - DMR Vault LE Pedal – DMR Bikes
Been solid for a few seasons of heavy abuse. They a bit higher cost but have been worth it.

I’d stick with composites… much better value, durable and the colour isn’t just painted on so they don’t show all the pedal strikes🙃.

Raceface chesters and Oneup composites seem to be the most common. I’ve had one or the other on every bike of mine. Kona wah wahs are also popular.

Hard to beat the One Up composites. And the aluminum version are a sweet upgrade.

I’ve been riding Raceface Chesters since I switched to flats. They’re pretty reasonably priced composite pedals, and pretty good quality. I’d be interested to know how more expensive flats compare, but i can’t fault the chesters

I’ve also been looking at new pedals, according to my research the Kona Wah Wah 2 has the largest/thinnest platform, but the DMR V11 and PNW Range have the most pins at 11. The new raceface chesters look good too but only have 9 pins. Not sure how any of it translates to riding, would be interested to hear if anyone has tried any of them

I don’t have experience with those, but ran the OneUp alu pedals for years. They do tend to get sloppy after a time, and while the rebuild kit helps a bit, they are still either too loose or too tight. I switched to RF Atlas and I really appreciate the build quality. The pins are thinner than other pedals, however and bend more easily, but also offer more grip with my Ride Concepts shoes which seem to be a bit harder than 5-10s.

@Chrisk I wouldn’t lose much sleep over 2 pins or a couple mm in the platform size. You won’t notice it.

Think it really comes down to try some different ones and see what you like yourself. I’ve tired the RF Chester’s, PNW and Deity Deftraps and wasn’t a fan of any of them. Personally my favourite so far are the Crankbrother Stamps since you can get them in a small and large size platform. I run the larger size

I tried a set of DMR Vaults this year. They seem to be my fave flat so far. Good concave and the pins seem to be a little larger in diameter. I have a set of spoons and the thin pins really poke into the rubber in the shoe which makes little adjustments harder imo. Vaults gave me a little more freedom and still grip like they’re supposed to. Best is to experiment to find your personal preferences.

I’m definitely overthinking it, just want to end up with something I like

Another vote for the OneUp composite pedals - I have two pairs. Since I’ve got them I’ve never thought about them when riding, which for pedals I would think is a good thing. Hard to beat for the price.

Solid point on the shoes here… pedals are only half of the equation. I have a pair of ride concepts and find them to be a hard compound and not terribly grippy. My 5-10s have much more grip

I’ve only ridden 510s. Might go with the one up composites

I am mainly a clip rider but just put a set of OneUp wave pedals on my new park park bike and so far have been impressed by the grip and that has just been riding the bike with random sneakers on and not my 510’s.
I have black composites in stock and black waves on the way, no regular aluminum pedals on had currently, but I can get them.

Im a fan of the chesters, my only beef is availability of replacement pins. I have them on both my bikes.

I had pnw loam masters on my yt last year they didnt hold up very long
.
3 years ago i had composite crankbros on my trek . Honestly i didnt like them at all i found the pins not long enought to provide decent grip

Ultimately this can be a personal preference thing and the degree of grip csn both be the how the peddle size fits to your foot as well as how much sole wear your shoes have. As they wear down theres less engagement with the peddle

Throwing in a vote for Deity Deftraps. Tall pins offer pedal grip for days.

Check out the Wolftooth Waveform.

I am not a flat pedal rider but if I decided I could no longer clip in, Waveform would be what I would be looking at.

Also, NRG used to make super solid affordable flats. Not sure if thats a thing anymore.

I went with diety super villains the wolf tooth were hard to find at the time. The grip is great, not like Brooklyn machine works shinburger pedals, but it’s pretty good.
