Is it correct that the current owners bought it around 2002 and stopped all the great mountain biking that was happening there? I remember riding and racing there in the 90’s but can’t recall why it all stopped.

That’s always been my understanding, but it’s before my time of living in the area.

Basically, yes. We had an agreement (we being the original ecmtb) to develop trails, and the freeride park at Martock, and they also worked with us to bring the Canada Cup here in the early 2000s. This was back when Joey O’Brien was still the owner. He loved bikes and really enjoyed seeing the hill used in the summer.

The year that Heather bought it was the last time racing was ever held at Martock. She had zero interest in paying the insurance to keep the hill accessible in the summer. Didn’t help that some of the riders were giant pricks in that final season, but I’ll keep those stories to myself. I’m sure there’s more to it, but here we are.

Glad to see that mtb may be coming back to Martock.

So many Shaun Palmer wannabes.

I really enjoyed racing martock in the 90s. One of the best courses around.

I think that’s where I met you the first time. We had the same purple Fat Chance jersey.

Coincidentally I have been digging old shirts out of storage for use lately.

That was a great time. Hopefully we have more racing at Martock in the future. Winter 4x anyone?

Yeah boi. Holding your bike in your lap on the chair was next level.

I must have missed that one. I remember being tossed around in a very bumpy pickup truck going up a very steep hill.

That was a winter 4x event we held.

I had a Norco VPS back then, incredibly awkward.

That was where I met you and Adam, after I had moved back from BC. I was happy to see MTB still happening at Martock.

My first intro to MTB in the late 80’s was riding a CCM 10 speed down the 4 wheeler trails the Martock summer maintenance guys used . I went and bought something closer to a “real” MTB from sportwheels (and a helmet) later that week.
