Can confirm. I ended up in ER getting a gash stapled back together because I caught a pin while the bike was sliding down a gravel hill. Pin dug into my shin and tore a gash almost the length of my hand. 
Not replacing the pedals though; instead bought some new knee pads with shin protection.
