If you look at worldwide bicycle construction there is no way. Consider developing countries where bicycles are often the main mode of transport. I would never choose anything but steel for that – strong, light, and repairable. No brainer that the majority of bicycle construction must be metal.
Yeah, maybe carbon for toys like recreational road and mountain bikes in the West, but not for serious transportation. Don’t forget that 2 billion people live in China and India alone, and both of those countries have more need for transport than they do for dentists’ toys, and bicycles are the cheapest form of transport machine.
