Quick Release Position

What’s the best position to close the quick releases on a mountain bike? Whenever I get my bike serviced, the techs usually close the quick releases so that the front wheel release is closed upward, parallel to the front fork. The rear is closed with the release between the seat stay and chain stay.

Why?

I find the rear wheel especially difficult getting fingers in between the frame members to open up the rear release. On my full suspension bike, I worry that the qr will interfere with the movement of the rear suspension.

I like for both of mine to be pointing backwards, so they don’t snag anything while I’m riding and accidentally open.

I always point the fork qr upward/parallel to the fork leg but not squeezed against against it (I see that one a lot). The rear qr I always close pointing toward the rear for the reasons @Rolls and @Rockhopper describe.

I’ve always done it exactly as you describe above, by the shops. I feel like this keeps the leaver out of the way of any hazard that may open it by accident.

I’ve never really worried about what position my rear quick release is, but after a wave of recalls I’ve been putting my front quick release pointing backwards in the side opposite the disc.
