While it seems like a cool idea, I can buy friction shifters for pretty cheap, and even got my current 7 speed indexed thumb shifter for under $10. I suspect this will fall into the world of hipsters who have to make their own artisan thumb shifters. Though ironically it is also those riders that find a bike which shifts gears to be a bad thing.
