Studding tires...help me choose my canvas

my old bike has 2.00 tires I don’t tink 2.1’s will be an issue since I do have a 2.35 on the front and I think a 2.35 would possiably clear in the rear but would leave little ot no room to stud

charging my drill now… should be an experience

I don’t use studs. I never drill the hole first. Just screw right on through. I use a lot… like every stud in a Cinder or Kinetic. I have NEVER lost a screw yet, and it is as grippy as bare pavement. I line them with an old tire with the bead cut off.
I have ridden on both boughten studded tires, and on car studded bike tire. They sucked in an epic way compared to my home made creations. Even on the BMX, they are awesome.
If you are worried about weight Matt, just remember how much more fit you will be come spring. It’s just a fact of life with studded tires.
Just try to use a screw that will only protrude about 1/8’ to 3/16’ of an inch past the treads. For you Trudeau loving metric hippies, there are conversions on the web, because I don’t know how many mil’s that is.

i agree with rally_kia on this one. have been running the same set of studded tires for over 7 winters made with drill point sheet metal screws. these work well on hard ice, general snow & slop, wet roots, rocks, mud, etc. - you name it.

i like the drill point type - they are not as sharp as a standard self tapping type but seem to be a lot harder and will last a lot longer. also, the 1/8 stickout is all you need as well - any longer & they tend to bend over

for a liner, i have use the heavy duty ‘thorn proof’ tubes from canadian tire & have never had a flat with them .

I thought I’d resurrect this thread. I know there was a studding party recently. Anyone want to post photos of their creations? Any more tire recommendations? I picked up a pair of Kenda Klaws last week, but haven’t had a chance to stud them yet.

Klaws should stud well. They have big lugs, I seem to remember…
Are you studding or screwing? Two_wheels has a good point about drill points. I should try that next time I do a set, which will probably be a while if we keep getting winters like these last few. I just keep running my regular trail rubber. I don’t know how great the crappy tire tubes will hold up, but I remember being astonded at just how thick and beefy they are. And heavy. But, it would make things easier and still lighter if they last well enough. Just maybe try to make sure you can get a drill point with a rounded head maybe. Getting mild again soon…

I might make a test tire to put on my commuter and see how those drill points hold up compared to car studs and regular studs. Jackson, I will need a car stud to do this test. A smaller one, most likely…

Studding. The trouble I had last time I studded tires was drilling through the knobs. The drill bit kept slipping off the knob. I may try poking a pilot hole for the bit before drilling through this time.

This will be my third set of studded tires. The other two are Kenda Anvils and Specialized Eskars. The Anvils are still going after several years. They seem to have a good tread design for studding. They do have a small volume, which can make fitting the tire liner and tube tricky.

The Eskars have big knobs, but there’s a big gap between the center knobs and side knobs. The side knobs to me seem to far out to stud, and I haven’t. Consequently, cornering is an issue with these tires. You’ve got to keep the bike upright at all times. On the other hand, they have more air volume, so it’s easier to fit the liner and tube, and they seem to work better in snow and slush than the Anvils.

Drill all the pilot holes first with a good sharp, small bit. Make sure to keep it centered. Maybe try keep a block of wood under the tire to drill against, then repeat with the proper sized bit.

All #12 studs

Great rear tire and doesn’t hold snow in the tread.

Big heavy go over anything tire, also the tread clears snow.

I just finished these

Top. Kenda Anvil 2.10

I think this will make a good rear tire.

Bottom. Bontrager XR4 2.20

It’s got a great number of studs along the outer edge I think this will make a great front tire.

This is what I have been using for a front tire for the past few years It works very well.

I use #12 studs I am very confident
in studded tires

I have never used screws but I have seen how well they grip the ice, possibly better than the studs.

I wouldn’t want to fall into the tire with screws, it would rip you to shreds, I’ve seen that with Andrew on the Skull trail, and I wouldn’t want to be responsible for injuring another rider in some mishap.

The only problem I have had in making my own studded tires I have learned to pick tires that have good rubber on the inside

As you can see in the next photos:

The canvas like liner tires eventually came apart and the tire went out of true.http://resource.pedaltrout.com/old_site_images/f4bf42cf3804e63afe227816e1fb3120.jpg
