Awesome! Thanks for the info.
Hopefully very small sections of pedaling on the down (timed) segments of the race. The climb up the hill is enough climbing imo!! Climb up, race down = Enduro
Chairlift/shuttle up race down is downhill racing IMO
also, for anyone competing who has never been to Keppoch I would strongly recommend a full face.
Maybe they will do it opposite that this year. Timed on the climb not the desent
I’ll quit right now. That’s just abuse.
Lol maybe they make which segment is timed and which isnt totally random… some climbs some descents… no one knows til the end
Oh hey surprise! Stage 3 is also a climb! We’re going to shuttle you to the bottom!
You can just go ahead and shuttle me to my car, it sounds like I need to go home.
The following is taken right out of the UCI rulebook.
Special Stages
All Special Stages (Abbreviated to SP in results/communications) must follow a predominantly descending route and focus on testing the rider’s technical skills. (EWS-E Power Stages are exempted)
As a guideline for course designers, Special Stages should aim to contain a maximum of 10% climbing and at least 90% descending. (Example: 2 vertical meters ascent for every 20 vertical meters descent).
Major wooden features (eg. wall-rides or large bridges) or wooden features that are situated in compressions or braking zones should be covered adequately with an anti-slip surface material.
A B-Line must be installed at every major gap jump or major drop off.
The General Classification (GC) of each race will be calculated by adding all Special Stage times together.
The start and finish of each Special Stage will be clearly marked on the map supplied by the Event Organiser.
There is no minimum or maximum duration for a Special Stage.
All Special Stages must be fully marked prior to Official Training and must be closed to the public during
Not sure if this was included but I did see a lot of people asking for details. If not currently included, then it may be good for future events.
UCI states:
Course Maps:
A course map must be produced by the organiser and displayed at registration and in Race Headquarters. This map may also be published on the event website. Riders must study the map and understand the race route before leaving the start.
“Registration” in this UCI reference is where you sign in and pick up your chip and/or plate on race day.
I can’t recall a World Cup, Norba (yes dating myself) or Canada Cup that had layouts of the course finalized
for me to study when I registered online (or mailed my cheque in- again dating
) for them.
There’s no tech zones, feed zones or multi lap loops and different course for diff categories to figure out for this event. Everyone races the same 5 stages. You ride up the hill at your own pace, you race down the hill.
Events often change course details and routes before and up to the day of the event depending on weather, commissars inspection, etc.
If anyone has tech questions after reading the tech doc I’d recommend emailing the organizer with your Qs or ask them at the pre-race riders meeting.
Great info! That fills in a lot of gaps I had in trying to understand.
I did not know what to expect, and so set the bar far too high.
Not a problem, everyone is at a different level of race experiences. Asking Qs is never a negative cuz if you have that Q then guaranteed others do too!
In the great big wide world of events this event is very low key. It’s run by 2-3 guys who are trying to get everything org’d and ready to go for race day. That includes stage layouts, stage marking, getting sponsors, contacting/enticing/motivating any food or beer sponsors to be onsite, dealing w insurance, registration, etc. etc. Fortunately guys like Lorenzo also step in to help with timing and results.
Ultimately we have an incredible community of riders who are amped to show up Sunday (Sat if they also want to pre-ride stages) with bikes, snacks and maybe a cooler with a couple of post-race cold ones and get at ‘er with their buddies, have some laughs and go faster and farther than they prob would on their own. There’s tons of good people to help and show others the way on race day. Don’t overthink any of it, don’t stress anything, it’s just riding bikes with your buddies.
Word, I was really impressed with the low key non-racey vibe at this event last year(reminded me of xc back before it blew up) . It was even more mellow than a dh event! Wtf. Don’t over think it and don’t over ride your skill set (looking at you, dirt jumps) and you are guaranteed to have a blast.
I was sad not to see riverside as one of the stages this year because thats where i made up all the time i lost on the techy stuff last year haha. Its for the best though because riverside was ruined after the race last year.
It was like peanut butter in sections. My first time riding it was on my race run.
It was greeeheeeheeeeasy
god i hope it doesnt rain this year. Skyline was a slip and slide with all those wet roots last year.
Skyline is beat out bad. As much as I like keppoch it needs serious upkeep, in specific areas. Also riverside has major drainage issues that are pretty solvable.
Last time i was there there was a massive hole in one of the berms on riverside and they put a stick in it to (i dont know? Warn people?) the thing is once you saw the stick it was to late and the stick was pointing towards oncoming riders. I stopped and removed it because i would rather smash a hole in a berm than get impaled by a stick.
I mean it was fun flying into the trees and all as long as you didn’t get hurt
