Wrandees was actually not too bad this morning. Trails had a chance to harden up overnight. Parked on the NW Arm side and rode Red Trail which was ok. The surface was a little soft and crunchy and it really sucked your energy in some spots. The perimeter trail along the lake was also energy draining where there hasn’t been much foot traffic. I crossed the Boy Scout Bridge and powered through some soft stuff to reach the hard pack on the other side where there is a lot of foot traffic. Studs are required for this trail and for Pipeline which is still not bad.
Cool Stuff. I was looking to get out this evening somewhere.
Does anyone know what the Fight Trail is like right now? Would it be good to ride on the weekend.
A friend is walking in today to check it out, it might be ok since its mostly open and most of the snow should be gone.
I’ll post later with results, thinking a sunday ride.
I’d be up for that! If it’s a go, please give directions to the new trail head for those of us that haven’t been there in 10 years…
Was up at Spider today. Ribbon of Love and Skull are great. Replicator is not bad going down. Studs would be first choice but can do without. Have to go early before it warms up.
first off shubie park, the main trail thru thr park from mic mac mall all the way to the camp site beach is bare. after that the main trail has snow and only went out to the edge of the park before turning around on the small loop so the lake charles section is still not any good. as well some of the other trails thru the park and the dog loop are bare so you can get in a ride but you would be better off at night with a lot less traffic to deal with.
second spider lake, well i did get a ride in this morning out to the bridge and back plus the ribbon. this was all rideable but a lot more work than it has been lately. foot traffic and the sun have made the trails much rougher and the snow is soft and loose in spots. by 930 the sun was up and things were quickly getting soft. bottom line is if it is below zero and the ground is firm you will get a ride but anything less and don’t bother.
Fight trail sounds ok from the new entrance to Lou’s Basement, but not sure about the rest. So at least you could ride to Lou’s and do a bunch of laps around that for some fun.
Going to FT tomorrow for 10am. This map should point out location, we park in the new subdivision at the end of Alabaster. You can see the trail to Lou’s, it comes off Alabaster, and goes toward flat lake, Lou’s is the small loop just before it.
Will try and make it…
Don’t think I’ll bring the little truck as I would have to leave around 6AM to get there on time…lol
I’m assuming studs are not needed… hope not.
I just finished taking my studs off, so I hope not…
Hope you guys had a good ride… stoopid DST! :x
CG and I were at Whopper yesterday (Saturday) afternoon. Mix of bare rock and soft snow. Snow in some places too deep to ride (6 inches). Mostly rideable.
Since no one is saying anything about Fight Trail…
We entered at the top of the hill in the usual place and rode the main trail to Lou’s Basement and then headed down to the Flat Iron Lake. The rock vein was exposed and we had no trouble (or wet feet) getting across to the other side. Ninety percent of the trails were rideable but we did encounter 6-8" deep grainy snow in a few places that was a momentum zapper and required us to walk (SHUDDER) )
We were out at 9:00am and were the only ones out that early. However there were a crapload of cars there when we got back so it’s great to see us dedicated riders getting out at this time of year
I did a quick ride in nine mile river tonight, it’s pretty good, mostly hard packed and a bit icy, studs weren’t necessary.
I rode Shubie Monday night. Ninety five percent of the snow is gone from the trail. What is left is very grainy and a momentum zapper. Even the crusher dust is VERY soggy in places. There were a couple of spots, in particular at the top of the hill after Vivians Way heading out, that was like pedaling in wet sand. I can just image what trails like the Ribbon of Love at Spider Lake would be like.
Great night to get some exercise so it was an awesome ride. I was back to my Jeep by MicMac Mall at 7:00 and it was still plenty bright to ride without a light. I think I will do it again tonight.
Rode Rockwood Park this morning. Barking Dog/Mayflower Lake was excellent. Mix of crunchy snow, ice and bare ground. Studs helped. Sweetness has sun exposure and was starting to melt. Main road was not bad but starting to melt. Cold nights expected for the next few days. Might be some good riding.
Some of the singletrack in HRM is pretty soft. Please be aware and choose your trail destination appropriately. We all know that it can take many hours to repair ruts caused by just one ride on a wet trail.
Anyone been out today?
I was thinking about it. Not sure where, have you been in Whopper?
